about

"September Song" is a fairly haunting piece originally written by German composer Kurt Weill in 1938. It is sung from the perspective of an older person suggesting to a younger suitor (or perhaps to a younger version of themselves) that the frivolities of courting are no longer for them. It speaks to the preciousness of time and the importance of time made for deep love and understanding. It is one of my all-time favourite standards, but I modified the lyrics of the verse slightly to make them more gender-neutral and more authentic to my nature.

lyrics

When I was a young lamb courting the world
I played me waiting game
If someone refused him with tossing curls
I'd let the old Earth take a couple of whirls
For as time went along they came my way
As time went along, they came

But it's a long long while from May to December
And the days grow short when you reach September
The autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
And I haven't got time for the waiting game

Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few
September, November
And these few precious days I'll spend with you
These precious days I'll spend with you

Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few
September, November
And these few precious days I'll spend with you
These precious days I'll spend with you
